Fatal Arson Arrest Announced By Milford Police

A man is facing multiple charges in connection with the death of a man in Milford, according to police.

MILFORD, CT — A man has been charged with murder in the death of another man at a homeless encampment in Milford, according to police.

Police responded to a report of a fire in a wooded area at the rear of Lowe's at 311 Old Gate Lane on Aug. 15.

Police found a man dead in one of the buildings in the homeless encampment where he lived.

Joseph Kane, 57, died due to smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. Another person and a firefighter were also hurt in the blaze.

An investigation found that the fire was arson.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the man's death was a homicide.

Matthew Kealey, 54, homeless, was taken into police custody Tuesday. He was charged with arson murder, murder, felony murder, first-degree arson, home invasion, first-degree strangulation, and first-degree assault on the elderly.

He was held on $2 million bond and taken to Milford Superior Court.
