Outside of his service and family; Gordon loved boating, photography, and had a lifelong curiosity for technology.
Herman Gordon Holst, "Gordon", 99, of Milford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026. Gordon was the son of Herman J. and Virginia Holst.
Gordon lived a long and meaningful life devoted to his family, his country, and the things he loved. A proud World War II Navy veteran, Gordon continued his commitment to serving others as a 50-year member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 24-03.
Gordon was a loving father grandfather and uncle. He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Girard and her husband, Jeffrey, and his beloved grandchildren, Brianna Girard and Hilary Girard-Duckworth, and nieces and nephews Ella Holst, Kim MCoy, Jeff McCoy, Pamela McCoy-Staurovsky, Sharon Labosky and Brent Reeve. He was predeceased by his brother, Eugene Holst, his sisters, Susan McCoy and Ellen Reeve and nephew Scott McCoy.

His family was a source of great pride and joy throughout his life.
Outside of his service and family, Gordon had many passions. He loved boating, spending time on the water whenever he could. He had a special love for animals and enjoyed photography, capturing the people, places, and moments that meant something to him.

Gordon also had a lifelong curiosity about technology and the changing world around him. He embraced new technology and made a point of keeping current well into his 90s. His willingness to learn and his genuine curiosity were a reflection of his lifelong interest in understanding how things worked and staying connected to the world around him.
Gordon will be remembered for his dedication, his love of family, his service to his country and community, his curiosity, and the many interests that brought him happiness throughout his 99 years.
His life touched the lives of many, and his memory will live on through the family and loved ones who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and remembered.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, October 2nd, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. Military Honors accompanied by a Prayer Service will begin at 12:30 p.m.
