Historic Milford Barn, Property Plan Returns With Key Changes

MILFORD, CT — The Board of Aldermen will review a proposed lease for the Stowe barn and property that prohibits its use as a commercial banquet facility or private event venue.

The item is on the board's agenda for Monday evening.

The amended version of the lease with the Walnut Beach Arts and Business Association states that the town-owned barn and property shall be used "as and for a community arts, cultural, and public market facility..."

Previously, there had been a proposal to use the barn and property to host weddings, parties and other private events.

However, there was pushback from the community on such a proposal. An amended version of the lease states that the property will "not be operated or marketed as a commercial banquet facility or private event venue whose primary purpose is the hosting of weddings, wedding receptions, private birthday parties, private graduation parties, or similar private social events for compensation."

Dean Fisher, an artist who owns a property adjacent to the barn, said: “I’m happy to know that the Stowe barn and property will be utilized as a productive educational and cultural facility and farmers market in a manner which benefits the entire community.

"I’m hopeful that this beautiful property and barn will be cared for in a manner which honors it wonderful architectural and agricultural history."

He added that he appreciative that the Walnut Beach Arts and Business Association is taking on this initiative, and "as art teachers and artists, we look forward to being valuable assets to this project."
