Iconic Milford Business Closes After More Than 100 Years: Report

The downtown business has been a local landmark and had been in its current location since the 1950s.

MILFORD, CT — It's an "end of an era," reports Milford native and NBC Connecticut news anchor Heidi Voight, who was the first to share the news that the iconic downtown pharmacy, Howes Drug & Medical at 78 Broad St. has closed after more than 100 years in business.

In a Facebook post, Voight said "...it’s been one of the most iconic facades on the green, the last independently owned pharmacy in the city of Milford. But as of today, Howe’s Drug joins the Beachcomber and Sisters Parklane Deli on the list of local businesses to close amid the pandemic. A sign on the door says customer prescriptions have been transferred to CVS."

A Patch editor called the local business and a voicemail message refers pharmacy customers to the CVS at 989 Boston Post Road.

On its website, which is still operational it says "Founded in 1911, Howes Drug & Medical is one of the oldest pharmacies in Connecticut. With over 100 years in business, it is a familiar landmark and a part of Connecticut's history.

"Originally owned by John T. Howes, the store was always in Milford's center but located a few blocks from its present location. In the early 1950s, Howes Drug & Medical moved to its current location on the green at 78 Broad Street.
