Initial Snow Accumulation Estimates Made For This Weekend In CT

Local weather experts and the National Weather Service have started to release snow accumulation estimates for this weekend's storm.

CONNECTICUT — As we get closer to the weekend more details and snow accumulation estimates are starting to come in concerning a winter storm expected for Saturday. It appears that areas along the immediate shoreline will see the least amount of snow, and inland and far northern areas of the state will see the most accumulating snow.

Along the shoreline the precipitation is expected to quickly change from snow to mixed precipitation and then plain rain, while inland and northern areas will see a longer period of accumulating snow.

WTNH News 8 Chief Meteorologist Gil Simmons says "My early thoughts on the accumulation are still around 1 inch to 4 inches. A little bit more in north western Connecticut."

NBC Connecticut meteorologists predict "A few inches of snow away from the shoreline and possibly more up north."

"As of right now, snow develops by Saturday afternoon," WFSB 3 TV Meteorologist Scot Haney said via the station's website. "However, given the storm track as our models are currently indicating, we’d see a transition to a wintry/icy mix, and then rain by Saturday evening/night. He adds that the state could see "several hours of accumulating snow before the precipitation changes to an icy mix and rain by Saturday night."

The National Weather Service says for Hartford, Tolland and Windham county that "There is a risk for plowable snow late Saturday into Saturday night, with the highest risk across the interior."

Thursday will be a day of transition for us in Connecticut. Gil Simmons adds via his social media, "Turning windy with 40s tomorrow then falling temperatures through the afternoon tomorrow! A brutally cold day on Friday with some sunshine but a wind chill of only 8 (degrees) all day long! I am expecting dry weather for Saturday morning followed by some snow breaking out Saturday afternoon changing to rain Saturday night."

The National Weather Service says that "Thursday will be a windy day, with northwest winds of 20-30 mph throughout the day, tapering by Friday morning."
