On October 27, 1643 Milford joined the New England Confederation. Milford kept its separate identity and government, but was bound to help others in the Confederation in case of attack or invasion.
Milford had a vigorous shipbuilding industry. The War of 1812, the tariff of 1816, currency fluctuations, and weather related events contributed to the demise. The failure of Pond, Baldwin & Company in 1814, the bankruptcy of Miles, Strong, and Miles in 1821, and the closing of Pond, Fowler & Company in 1823 effectively ended the industry.
Paul’s Famous Hamburgers opened in 1948.For several generations it became a favorite haunt for teenagers. Paul’s closed in 2008.
