In 1643 the Milford community was in desperate need of a blacksmith. The community hired John Smith from Boston. Part of his inducement package was a piece of land on the Wepawaug River. His relocation to Milford saved the settlers frequent journeys to New Haven for their ironwork needs.
Milford’s seventeen miles of coastline is unofficially divided into various beach communities. Pictured is the Merwin’s Hotel at the junction of Laurel and Cedar Beaches. It was a popular summer destination.
