IT HAPPENED IN MILFORD WEEK 24

In 1712 the Milford Town Committee entered into an agreement with Mr. Richard Blackleack of Stratford to carry the inhabitants of Milford over Stratford River (Housatonic River) for one half price. The town agreed to furnish a ferry-house and a boat on the Milford side of the river.
In 1810 the Gulf Street Bridge was completed. The bridge separates Gulf Pond from Milford Harbor. The bridge remains a mecca for fishermen and women today.
Sylvester Z. Poli, an Italian immigrant, built the Villa Rosa for his wife. It was completed in 1913. Poli, a theatre magnate, hosted movie and vaudeville stars of the era. Some of his guests included: Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, and Al Jolson .He housed his guests in the smaller stucco summer houses on the mansion’s property.
