Janice Frederickson Carter, age 80, of Milford, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026
Janice was a caretaker through and through, always making sure everyone else had what they needed before she thought of herself.
Janice Frederickson Carter passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 80. Born in Bridgeport on February 13, 1946, Janice and her husband, Jim, moved to Woodmont, Connecticut in 1970 to raise their family, and she lived there for more than 55 years.
Above all else, Janice was a loving wife and mother who devoted her life to her family. She and Clarence "Jim" Carter III were married for 58 years, until his passing in April 2025. Their union was blessed with four children: the late Kelli Goulart (Rich), Mary D'Amato (James), Kevin Carter (Kristin), and Hope Martin (Jake). Janice was proud of her children and raised them to be kind and outgoing, just as she was. She was a devoted grandmother to James and Frank D'Amato, who affectionately knew her as "Nanny."
Janice was a caretaker through and through, always making sure everyone else had what they needed before she thought of herself. Her door on Howe Street was always open, and for generations of neighborhood kids it was the house for sleepovers, pool parties, and summer afternoons on the slip and slide. She loved her cats, her soap operas, Barry Mannilow, and a good piece of gossip. She was never without her pocketbook or her lipstick. Sundays were for family: fairs, restaurants, shopping trips, and her favorite outing of all, a day at the casino.

Janice never drove, and she never needed to. She walked everywhere. She sold Avon for over 40 years and gave countless hours volunteering at the Milford public schools her children attended, including Fannie Beach, Seabreeze, East Shore, and Live Oaks. For more than 20 years she also worked part time at the local corner store, where the people were not coworkers and customers, but family, and where she was known simply as "Mama."
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Janice's memory may be made to The Purple Pantry Boxes of Milford.
