Judge Takes Action On Maren Sanchez Lawsuit Against Milford

The judge just took action in the lawsuit that was filed against the city of Milford and Board of Education.

MILFORD, CT — The family of Maren Sanchez's civil lawsuit against the city of Milford and Board of Education received a boost recently as a Superior Court Judge refused to dismiss the case, the New Haven Register reports.

The city had hoped the case would be tossed as it argued there was nothing that could have been done to prevent then 16-year-old Christopher Plaskon from stabbing to death Maren Sanchez at Jonathan Law High School.

But the judge in his ruling said that Plaskon's behavior, as reported by Sanchez prior to her death, should have triggered the "mandatory procedure of the Suicide Prevention and Intervention Procedure," the Register reports.

The lawsuit filed by Sanchez's mother Donna Sanchez alleges that guidance counselors and others were negligent and didn't follow proper procedure when they were told Plaskon may be suicidal six months before the incident, Patch previously reported. She offered to settle the case for $23 million.

Sanchez was fatally stabbed in April 2014 after she turned down Plaskon's prom invitation. Plaskon pleaded no contest to murder. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison but could be out of jail after 13 years.

A civil lawsuit against Plaskon was settled last year for $1.6 million.
