Obituary: Margaret Cushnie, 85, Of Milford

She was a teacher at St. Gabriel's School in Milford "where she became a beloved figure for many."

MILFORD, CT — Margaret Cushnie, 85, of Milford, passed away on November 12, 2024. Born on May 5, 1939 in Mount Vernon, New York, she was the daughter of the late George and Helen Cushnie.

Margaret was born and raised in the Westchester and New York City area, where she attended school and graduated from high school. After graduation, she chose a path of deep faith and entered a convent, dedicating herself to a life of devotion. For twelve years, Margaret was an ordained sister, a time that was marked by her spiritual commitment and her pursuit of education. She earned a degree in education during this period, which led her to a lifelong passion for teaching.

Margaret’s career in education began in parochial schools, where she taught grade school children. After leaving the convent, Margaret relocated to Milford in the 1970s to be closer to her mother. It was there that she continued her teaching career, joining the faculty of St. Gabriel’s School in Milford, where she became a beloved figure for many. For over three decades, Margaret made a profound impact on the lives of her students, not only as a teacher, but as a protector and mentor who instilled kindness, compassion, and a love for learning.

She cherished her family, particularly her niece and nephew, whom she loved as her own children. Her love extended to her many cats, whom she cared for and spoiled with the same tenderness she gave to everyone around her.

Margaret was a kind soul, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. She valued her friendships deeply and was the first to offer support or a listening ear.
