Maureen Groves

1929-2024

Maureen Groves, 95, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Michael Groves, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Born on June 18th, 1929, in London, United Kingdom, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Lieba Field.
Maureen received her early education and spent her formative years in London before embarking on an extraordinary journey. In 1948, Maureen immigrated to Australia, where she met Michael, the love of her life. They were engaged on her 21st birthday and married in 1950. Their daughter was born a year later, and their growing family eventually made their way to the United States, settling first in Stamford, Connecticut. For eighteen years, Maureen balanced her time between working as a toy store clerk during the holiday season and lovingly tending to her family. She began a career in a government-affiliated role, securing her status as a permanent US citizen. Her professional journey culminated with 23 dedicated years at the Stamford YMCA.
In Milford, where she resided for the remainder of her life, Maureen’s community involvement flourished. A devout member of the Mary Taylor Methodist Church, Maureen and Michael were actively involved in church activities. Maureen was particularly fond of "The Domino Girls," a social group she founded with her fellow church ladies. The group enjoyed game nights and summer outings at Walnut Beach, proudly wearing necklaces adorned with small dominoes as a symbol of their camaraderie.
Maureen was well-known for her knitting. She delighted in creating sweaters, gifts, and her signature "beloved beanie hats" for friends and family. Never one to sell her creations, Maureen took immense joy in giving them away, often bringing baskets of hats to church for others to take. Her knack for fulfilling special requests and her generosity made her beloved among those who knew her. Her directness, intelligence, and open-hearted nature earned her the affection of many. Known for her no-nonsense attitude and ability to “call a duck a duck,” Maureen’s generosity and kindness were deeply appreciated by those around her.
In the final six months of her life, Maureen was grateful to have her daughter by her side as her caretaker.

She is survived by her daughter Lynnette Steeves (William), sons Laurence M. Groves and Michael Borst. Grandchildren Gregory Risi and Matthew Risi (Shari), as well as her Great Grandchildren Dominic, Victoria, Abigail, Kelly and Keisha. Her best friend Ruth Starcher, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her two beloved cats, Samantha and Tabitha.
Maureen’s spirit, her knitting, and her unwavering love will remain in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her
