Milford Dog Owners Could Soon See A Big Change At Popular Beach

A proposed ordinance change would impact dog owners in Milford. Residents can weigh in Thursday.

MILFORD, CT — Dog owners could soon be allowed to bring their pets to Walnut Beach for seven months of the year under a proposed change to city regulations.

The proposal would permit dogs on Walnut Beach from Oct. 1 through April 30, provided owners follow posted rules and regulations.

The Milford Board of Aldermen is scheduled to discuss the proposed ordinance change Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

According to the organization, Mayor Rich Smith has spearheaded the effort to amend the city's ordinance concerning dogs on beaches.

The proposed amendment would also allow the city to organize, permit or host dog-friendly events at municipal parks and beaches.

The proposal follows a recent dog beach event that drew considerable interest, according to Friends of Milford Animal Control.

"We had such an amazing turnout at our dog beach event, and so many of you asked about making it permanent!" the organization wrote in a Facebook post.

The group is urging residents who support the change to speak during Thursday's meeting.

The proposed ordinance would establish a seasonal period for dogs at Walnut Beach rather than allowing them throughout the year.
