Milford Elks Host Moving Flag Day Ceremony on Milford Green

MILFORD, CT — On Sunday, June 14 at 4:00 PM, Milford Elks Lodge #1589 hosted its annual Flag Day Ceremony on the Milford Green, continuing a patriotic tradition that has been observed by the Lodge for generations.

The ceremony, coordinated by James Kiely and presented by the officers of Milford Elks Lodge #1589, followed the traditional Elks Flag Day ritual, which honors the history, symbolism, and evolution of the American flag. Throughout the ceremony, members of Boy Scout Troop 721 and local Girl Scout troops carried historic versions of the American flag, one by one, as the story of each flag's place in American history was told, creating a powerful visual representation of the nation's journey.

The Milford Volunteers Ancient Fife & Drum Corps provided patriotic music throughout the event, helping to bring the history of our nation to life. The ceremony opened with the National Anthem sung by Sandie James, followed by a moving rendition of America the Beautiful performed by Milford Elks Rider Bob Tschilske.

At the end of the ceremony, Mayor Richard Smith presented Milford Elks Lodge #1589 with an official Flag Day Proclamation and offered remarks recognizing the importance of preserving patriotic traditions within the community.

The Daughters of the American Revolution also participated in the closing ceremonies and presented an additional proclamation to the Mayor, further emphasizing the significance of the occasion and the shared commitment to honoring America's heritage.

The Elks Flag Day Ceremony is one of the Order's most cherished traditions. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was the first fraternal organization to officially observe Flag Day in 1907, and it remains the only fraternal organization that requires every Lodge to hold an annual Flag Day ceremony. The ceremony honors the flag of the United States, celebrates the anniversary of its adoption on June 14, 1777, and reflects on the freedoms and accomplishments achieved under its banner.

As Milford prepares to celebrate America's 250th anniversary, this year's Flag Day ceremony served as a particularly fitting beginning to the week's festivities. By tracing the evolution of the American flag and reflecting on the nation's history, the ceremony provided a powerful reminder of the principles and sacrifices that have shaped our country over the past 250 years.

The Elks Americanism Committee promotes patriotism, civic pride, respect for the American flag, and appreciation for the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
