Milford Firefighter Pay Case Ends In 6-Figure Settlement
The city and a firefighters' union recently reached an agreement following a 2023 lawsuit regarding overtime pay.

MILFORD, CT — Milford Professional Firefighters Local 944 has settled its lawsuit against the City of Milford for incorrect overtime wage calculations.
The city settled a 2023 lawsuit with 88 firefighters for $400,000, addressing Fair Labor Standards Act violations, according to the firefighters' union.
"A new labor agreement ensures fair pay moving forward," the union said in a Facebook post. "This settlement is not just about correcting past mistakes, it’s about recognizing the tireless commitment of our firefighters, who work around the clock to protect your homes, businesses, and loved ones."

City Attorney Jonathan Berchem did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Out of the settlement, $100,000 was to cover pay to the firefighters' attorneys with the remaining $300,000 to be split up among the firefighters to cover back wages and damages, according to a statement from the union.

The lawsuit alleged that the city "failed to include numerous wage augments in their regular rate of pay," violating federal law.
The firefighters' complaint listed longevity pay, certification pay, education incentive pay, and holiday pay as improperly excluded from their regular rate of pay.
