Milford Man Sentenced For Accident that Left a Milford Couple Dead

Kevin and Brenda Tanski were fatally struck by James Dorso's car.

The driver who reportedly struck and killed a Milford couple during the February 2013 blizzard was sentenced to serve the next three and a half years in prison, the Milford Mirror reported Thursday.

James Dorso II, 33, was sentenced to 10 years in prison suspended after three and a half years served. He was originally charged with second-degree manslaughter and reckless driving, but was convicted of two counts of misconduct with a motor vehicle, the Mirror reports. .

According to Milford Police, Dorso was reportedly driving on Bridgeport Avenue — his street of residence — at 11:19 a.m. on Feb. 11, 2013 when he struck four pedestrians near the intersection of Cowles Street.

The pedestrians, the Tanski family, were walking along the shoulder of the roadway, police said, in the wake of the historic blizzard that left about three feet of snow across the city and made sidewalks impassable. Both the driver and the pedestrians were heading eastbound to Dunkin’ Donuts, according to the police report.

Two of the pedestrians — — were initially listed in critical condition, while one of their children suffered minor injuries and another was uninjured, police said.

Kevin Tanski succumbed to his injuries two days later, on Feb. 13, and his wife, Brenda, passed away three days after that, on Feb. 16.

In the arrest warrant it listed numerous motor vehicle violations against Dorso, the Mirror reported.

In an outpouring of support from the community, a fundraiser was set up to help the surviving Tanski children.
