Milford Named First StormReady Community In New Haven County
Milford has become the first community in New Haven County to earn StormReady certification from the National Weather Service.
MILFORD, CT — A recognition ceremony was recently held at Milford City Hall to mark the city’s designation as a StormReady community, the first in New Haven County to receive the certification.
Mayor Richard Smith announced the achievement, calling it the result of a coordinated effort across multiple departments and the community. Emergency Management, Fire, Police, Health, Public Works, Open Space, Inland Wetlands, and residents all played a role in meeting the program’s standards, according to a statement from the city.
StormReady is a national preparedness program developed by the National Weather Service to help communities improve their ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from severe weather. To earn the designation, municipalities must meet rigorous requirements related to emergency communication, operations, public outreach and coordination with weather service officials.

City officials said the designation reflects an ongoing commitment rather than a final milestone. Milford plans to continue strengthening emergency preparedness, expanding outreach, enhancing communication systems and maintaining close coordination with the weather service.
Certificates were presented by Nelson Vaz, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York, and Douglas Glowacki of the state Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Smith said the city will continue working to build a safer and more resilient community.
