Background on the downtown double shooting and robbery
Police said the incident began at 1:32 a.m. March 1 at the parking garage at 1 New Haven Avenue.
“Investigation revealed that a group of people had left Eli’s Tavern located at 21 Daniel Street and were walking into a parking garage at 1 New Haven Avenue when approached by two male suspects,” said Police spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Nielsen. “The suspects demanded the group give them their personal belongings as one of the suspects pointed a handgun at the group.
“The armed suspect discharged the firearm, striking one of the group members in the neck while continuing to point the firearm at the group,” Nielsen said. “In self- defense, another person in the group removed his licensed firearm and returned fire, striking the armed suspect. The second suspect fled the scene on foot.”
Police said they recovered two guns at the crime scene.
Both the suspect and the victim were transported to a local hospital. The victim was treated for his injuries and later released. The wounded suspect, Richard, 23 was in critical condition. Richard was held on $500,000 and charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, four counts of criminal attempt to commit first-degree robbery, and other charges.
