Milford Representative Kim Rose Announces Public Hearing on Affordable Housing

Several proposals submitted to the housing committee will be heard at the hearing.

State Representative Kim Rose (D-Milford), vice chair of the legislature’s Housing Committee, announce that her committee has agreed to hold a public hearing in New Haven to address the affordable housing statute that will help Milford and other towns find a sustainable solution with the affordable housing mandate.

Rep. Rose has been championing a fix since she was sworn in 2011 to serve in the legislature. The existing law, otherwise known as 8-30 g, has been used by contractors to bypass local zoning laws creating serious concerns for neighborhoods in Milford and other cities and towns.

“I am extremely excited that after several years of hard work, I can say we are finally heading in the right direction,”Rose said in a press release. “Bringing attention to this issue in Hartford took a lot of time and effort, but I am optimistic that at the end of the process we will find workable alternatives.”

Last February, Rep. Rose led a meeting with local officials and Housing Committee Co-Chair Larry Butler (D-Waterbury) in Milford, where they toured affordable and public housing developments and discussed specific needs in Milford.

“Both my former colleagues, James Maroney and Paul Davis were equally invested in this issue. Together with Senator Slossberg, we were able to make a strong case to take us where we are today,” Rose said in the press release.

Several proposals have been submitted to the Housing Committee that will be heard at the public hearing on Feb. 5 from 5-6 p.m. at the Board of Alders Chambers in New Haven located on the second floor of 165 Church Street.

“I strongly encourage all residents and homeowners concerned about this issue to save the date and come join us for this critical discussion,”Rose said in the press relase. “This is our chance to have our voices heard. We have the power to make a difference.”
