Milford Schools Begin Construction Work, Map Out What Comes Next

MILFORD, CT — Construction is getting underway on several Milford school projects as officials also begin mapping out the next steps for the district's long-range facilities plan.

Work has started at Jonathan Law High School, including demolition and hazardous-material remediation. The school's technical education wing has been partitioned off, allowing construction to continue during the school year with an aim of minimizing disruptions.

HVAC projects are also moving forward at Meadowside Elementary School and East Shore Middle School, while a roof project is underway at West Shore Middle School.

Meanwhile, the Board of Education discussed the next steps for Milford's recently adopted long-range facilities plan at its Monday meeting, which includes proposed new schools to replace JFK Elementary School and Live Oaks Elementary School.

Officials outlined a lengthy process that still requires several levels of review before the projects can move forward. The plan must ultimately go through city officials, including the Planning and Zoning Board, Board of Finance and Board of Aldermen.

The district is also planning additional community outreach about the facilities proposal. Board members discussed holding informational sessions for parents, although there was concern that school open houses may not be the best setting because families are primarily focused on meeting teachers.

Separately, Milford has submitted an esports-related project to the state to determine whether it qualifies for reimbursement. A decision is expected by the end of the legislative session in May 2027, while planning is continuing for construction to begin late next year.
