Milford Umpires Association Awards Scholarships to Colleges
8 college scholarships awarded
The Milford Umpires Association, a member of the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA), recently awarded eight college scholarships, made possible through the collection of team fees from local ASA adult slow-pitch softball tournaments.
The recipients of the 2014 Milford Umpires Association scholarships were: John Casey, Naagma Timakondu, Lucy Weissauer and Nicholas Weissauer, from Joseph A. Foran High School; and John Lawless, Nicole Postighone, Dillon Rocha and Jocelyn Travis, from Jonathan Law High School.
The recipients were selected in conjunction with the respective school guidance departments, and were honored for scholastic achievement, community involvement, and participation in high school athletics. All of the scholarship recipients plan to attend four-year colleges.

From Foran High School, John Casey is a CAPT Scholar, an Eagle Scout for the Boy Scouts of America, and participated in soccer, track and field, and basketball. Naagma Timakondu also is a CAPT Scholar, an Honor Guard member, and four-year member of the tennis team (senior captain). Lucy Weissauer participated in, and was senior captain of, the Foran volleyball, basketball and softball teams; is a member of the National Honor Society; and was named an All-SCC Scholar Athlete. Nicholas Weissauer is a CAPT Scholar, a recipient of the Michael’s Leadership Award, and a key player – and two time captain – of the Foran High School football team.
John Casey will attend Fordham University in the fall. Naagma Timakondu and Lucy Weissauer are enrolled at the University of Connecticut. And Nicholas Weissauer will attend Muhlenberg College, in Pennsylvania.

From Jonathan Law High School, John Lawless is a CAPT Scholar, an Eagle Scout, and a participant in both indoor and outdoor track, who currently holds the school record in the 55 meter hurdles. Nicole Postighone participated in track, and is a CAPT Scholar and a Keyette. Dillon Rocha, a four-year baseball player and senior captain, will graduate with distinction, having earned more than 200 hours of community service. Jocelyn Travis is a CAPT Scholar, a Natural Helper, and a four-year band member, playing flute, guitar and percussion.
John Lawless will attend Drexel University in the fall. Nicole Postighone is enrolled at Loyola University. Dillon Rocha will attend the University of New Haven, where he intends to continue playing baseball. And Jocelyn Travis will attend the University of Connecticut.
In addition to funding these annual scholarships, the Milford Umpires Association also donates to the local Toys for Tots campaign and the Milford Food Bank. The Association has 26 members who provide umpiring services to the City of Milford Recreation Department, as well as state and national softball tournaments.
“We congratulate the recipients, and wish them the best in their future studies,” said Russell Pasacreta, president of the Milford Umpires Association. “It’s very gratifying to award these scholarships. In addition to their athletic and academic achievements, these young people have distinguished themselves by serving the community in ways that are too numerous to mention. We salute them all.”
