Milford's Most Popular Dog Names/Breeds

There are many Milford dogs named Molly or Bella, but only one Sig Hampton Majestic Mitts. Here's the full count.

MILFORD, CT — If your dog's name is Molly, Bella or Luna she's in good company in Milford.

We tallied the most popular dog names and breeds based on the city’s dog license registry, which contains about 2,700 up-to-date unique records.

Molly is Milford’s most popular dog name, with about 31 registered in town. Bella comes in a close second with 27. The top 10 names (see end of article for full list) are:

Labrador retriever mixes are the most popular registered dog breed in Milford, based on available data. Labrador retrievers came in second.

General mixed breed dogs came in third, and golden retrievers are the fourth most-popular. Terrier mix came in fourth and German shepherd mixes were fifth. Golden retrievers and German shepherds are nearly tied in popularity if purebred and mixed breeds are counted together.

Labrador retrievers have topped the list of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. for the past 30 years, according to the American Kennel Club. French bulldogs have increased in popularity over the past five or so years and are now the second most popular breed in 2020. German shepherds came in third for 2020, followed by golden retrievers and bulldogs.

State law requires all dogs six months and older to be licensed by June. The annual cost is $8 for a spayed female or neutered male and $19 for non-spayed and non-neutered dogs. Applications can be sent in online, by email, postal mail or in person.



Note: Information from Milford City Clerk dog license records from May 2021 to March 2022. Around 2,700 entries are included, but breed information wasn't accessible for about 900 dogs. Dog names aren't edited, so tallies don't take into account various spellings of names.
