TRUMBULL, CT—A Navy commander with Milford and Trumbull ties has taken command of the USS Hartford submarine.

Cmdr. Matthew Fanning took the position in August. The Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine's homeport is in New London at the Naval Submarine Base.

Fanning went to high school in Trumbull and his parents moved to Milford when he was a teenager, according to the Milford Mirror.

"This ceremony is about you -- you as individuals, you as the crew -- and about your success as the lifeblood of the Hartford," Fanning said at a change of command ceremony held in New London.

"The story of the Hartford begins a new chapter today and I think it will be the best one yet," said Cmdr. Thomas Aydt, outgoing commander of the submarine. "I have known Cmdr. Fanning for a while and I can't think of anyone that I would rather see leading Hartford into the future."
