Project to Help Raise Funds for Vets & Project HEAL

West Shore Middle School students are preparing for their annual class project, "The Veterans Fundraising Dinner."

From Milford ED: The eighth-grade class at West Shore Middle School is preparing for their annual class project, “The Veterans Fundraising Dinner.” Now in its 18th year at the school, students select a veteran-based organization and plan the fundraising benefit dinner that includes an evening of speeches, dinner, music, and displays.

The event will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the school, (located at 70 Kay Avenue, Milford, CT 06460). This year, the students decided to focus on Project HEAL.

Project HEAL works to train canines who then help wounded warriors gain greater independence and mobility. The dogs are taught to, among other things, pick up dropped objects, open and close doors, pull wheelchairs, interrupt the nightmares and flashbacks that are symptomatic of PTSD, remind their human to take his/her meds and warn of approaching strangers, all the while providing unconditional love and devotion. (And that, we think, is awesome!)

In years past, students at the school have raised funds for the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., the

West Haven Veterans Museum and Learning Center, and many more. Students at the school have worked together to publicize their event, make posters, and organize the evening’s activities.
