Initial Snow Accumulation Estimates Released For Super Bowl Sunday In Southern CT

The National Weather Service provides new details, updates regarding the chance of snow on Super Bowl Sunday in southern Connecticut

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — There is a chance that southern Connecticut may see snow begin early Sunday morning, which could add up to a minor snow accumulation, according to the latest updates from the National Weather Service.

The chance of snow for southern Connecticut is currently at around 50 percent, and the weather service said there will be a sharp cut-off on who sees snow and who doesn't. The closer you are to the coast, the better the chance you have for seeing light snow accumulation, the weather service said.

Areas in northern Connecticut only have a 20 percent chance of snow on Sunday. The weather service said most areas should see about an inch of snow Sunday, and there is the potential for a maximum of 2-3 inches for the region. Again, the big question is where will the cutoff line be for the precipitation.

It's also an odd forecast in that temperatures on Saturday climb into the mid 50s and then drop rapidly, and we're below freezing on Sunday and Monday and barely above the freezing mark on Tuesday. Better and warmer weather returns on Wednesday of next week.

"There had been a time when model ensembles had some members hinting at a more robust winter storm for the area, but that scenario seems very unlikely at this time. There is a 30 to 50 percent chance of an axis of light snow spreading in from the SW after midnight Saturday into Sunday morning. This looks to be a narrow band of snow with the potential for up to an inch across the area, mainly down at the coast."

One model shows that there may be no snow, the weather service said, while another computer model reveals the area could see 2-3 inches of snow.

"...Regardless, this would be a light snowfall event with the potential upper end being an advisory level event (2 to 3 inches). Snow is forecast to taper off from west to east during the afternoon into the early evening hours."
