Suspects Charged In Milford Home Invasion, Car Theft: Police

Police used stop sticks to deflate the tires of a stolen BMW, and a police dog played a role in tracking down two suspects.

MILFORD, CT — Two suspects were arrested following a home invasions and car theft in Milford last week, according to police.

Police responded to a report of a car being stolen at 2:40 a.m. Friday on Milford Point Road. Police were told while on their way that the suspects had entered the home.

Police arrived at the home as a BMW occupied by a single male fled at a high speed.

Officers used stop sticks to deflate the car's tires near Milford Point Road and Deerwood Avenue. The suspect left the car, fled on foot, and was not caught.

Officers at the home saw two males running out of the rear door and chased them on foot onto the beach. A K9 and his handler were among those in pursuit, and the K9 caught the juvenile suspect.

Police found multiple items that belonged to the victim on the juvenile as well as a large sum of cash. The juvenile suspect was given medical attention and taken to the hospital.

K9 Rip and his handler continued to track the second suspect who had fled on foot.

"After a track through multiple backyards and marsh lines, K9 Rip’s behavior intensified, showing that the suspect was likely in the immediate area," police said in a statement.

Police gave commands for the suspect to make himself known. The K9 alerted officers to the bottom of the boardwalk, which was only about six inches from the ground. Officers bent down and found the suspect lying under the boardwalk.

The suspect refused to come out and eventually the K9 was "able to apprehend the suspect, pulling him out slowly," police said.

Police identified him as Jahquil Louis, 19, of Newark, New Jersey. He was given medical attention before being transported to Milford Hospital.

Louis was charged with first-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary, second-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny, larceny of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle, and interfering with an officer. He was held on $500,000 bond.

A juvenile was charged with first-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary, second-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny, larceny of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle, and interfering with an officer on juvenile summons.

The investigation is ongoing. Police said the incident was not random and do not believe there is any threat to the public.

"We would like to highlight and stress the importance of the amazing work done by Milford Police Patrol Units, especially K9 Rip," police said in a statement. "The excellent and timely response resulted in the apprehension of these two suspects and ensured the safety of our residents. Great work."
