Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Southern Connecticut

The National Weather Service cautions that some storms could produce large hail for southern Connecticut.

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — In a 4:30 p.m. update the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the entire state of Connecticut up until 10 p.m.

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — From 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, southern Connecticut may see strong-to-severe thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

As is always the case with thunderstorms, some folks may see storms and some may see only sunny skies.

The National Weather Service said a cold front will bring "isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon into evening. Some storms could be strong to severe, and while large hail cannot be ruled out, damaging wind gusts will be the more likely threat."

And not to look too much beyond Tuesday but Thursday could feature more widespread severe weather.

Concerning Tuesday's storm chances, the weather service said ,"A prefrontal trough will move through prior to this, in the early to mid- afternoon hours, with the best timing for any showers and thunderstorms from 2 pm to 8 pm."

Southwestern Connecticut is the most likely to see thunderstorms today, according to the weather service.

"Despite the uncertainty in coverage, some of the storms that do develop may become strong to severe," the weather service said concerning today's unsettled weather. "The main threat would be strong to damaging winds ... a large hail threat (1" or greater in diameter). However, this threat is lower than the wind threat. Finally, heavy rain will be a threat as well."

And we're headed toward another day above 90 degrees, which seems to feel like a daily occurrence this summer.

WTNH News 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons said, "Hot weather expected again today with moderate humidity and temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The heat index could be up around 100°! I need you to pay attention to a passing thunderstorm today. Some of the storms could be severe with a damaging wind gust! The whole weather pattern changes for nicer breathing air tonight and tomorrow. Highs tomorrow at 75° to 80° with sunshine and low humidity! Severe storms and more humidity coming back Thursday."
