The sighting of this particular whale is so rare that officials can't recall the last time one was seen.

MILFORD, CT — A Milford resident took video of what appears to be a very rarely seen pilot whale near Welches Point. The video was taken on Nov. 19, according to the popular Facebook group 'You Know You Live In Milford, CT If..."
"Husband was fishing near Welches Point this morning and this swam up to boat. Anyone have any idea on what this is?" wrote Sandy Oku on the Milford Facebook page.
Michael Occhineri, a local fisherman, took the video, according to the Milford Mirror. The whale was about seven or eight feel long and it's believed to be a pilot whale. Another pilot whale was also spotted by the fishermen.

On the Milford Facebook page numerous people speculated about what exactly was on the video but by the end, the consensus was that it's a rarely seen pilot whale.
Greg Thornhill wrote on the Milford Facebook page, "That’s a pilot whale. I’d be willing to put all my money on it. They are in the same scientific family classification as a dolphin and a Orca. They are smaller than an orca closer in size to a dolphin usually bigger. All black. This animal has the dorsal fin and blow hole in this video. And I wouldn’t say sick at all. All the animals from this classification are very curious especially of people and boats and are known sometimes to even follow or play with boats. Pilot whales are not as often seen and he was very lucky to see them."

Occhineri and Oku sent the video to the Maritime Aquarium and Dave Sigworth, spokesman for the aquarium, told the Milford Mirror that after reviewing it, it does look like a long-finned pilot whale. He said such a sighting is very rare and he guessed that it was a baby pilot whale because full adults grow up to 20 feet.
