MONROE, CT — Monroe voters will head to the polls May 5 to decide on the town’s proposed 2026–2027 budget, which includes a tax increase, according to town officials.
The proposed budget totals about $113.6 million, representing a roughly 5 percent increase over the current year.
Officials have proposed raising the mill rate from 28.67 to 29.88, an increase of about 4.22 percent.
Town leaders have said the increase is driven in part by rising costs, including a significant jump in medical insurance and contractual obligations.
The proposal also includes increased funding for education, municipal services and infrastructure, according to budget documents.
The referendum is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with voting taking place at the Community Center site, formerly St. Jude School, at 709 Monroe Turnpike.
