MONROE, CT — Monroe residents looking to celebrate Independence Day will have several options this year, from a unique townwide display to nearby fireworks shows.
Monroe's Light Up Monroe initiative is encouraging residents to place candle-lit luminaria bags outside their homes on July 4 as part of the town's celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
Organizers are offering luminaria kits for purchase and hope the display will create a community-wide tribute visible throughout town on Independence Day.
One of the closest fireworks options for Monroe residents is Trumbull Day, where fireworks are scheduled for June 27 at Trumbull High School. Organizers say the display will begin at dusk, likely around 9 p.m.
The annual Derby-Shelton fireworks celebration is planned for July 2 at 9:15 p.m. in downtown Derby and Shelton. The free event will feature live music, food vendors and a fireworks display at dusk, with a rain date of July 5.
Weston's annual "3rd of July" celebration is set for July 3 at Weston Middle School Field. The family-friendly event includes live music, food trucks and fireworks at dusk. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and the fireworks display starts at dusk.
Residents planning to attend any of the celebrations are encouraged to check event websites and social media pages for parking information, admission details and weather-related updates.
