Dog Rescued After Fire Damages Monroe Two-Family Home

MONROE, CT — A dog was rescued after a fire damaged one unit of a two-family home in Monroe on Sunday afternoon, according to fire officials.

Volunteer firefighters were dispatched to a reported house fire on Barn Hill Road at approximately 4 p.m., the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department said.

Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack and quickly contained the fire to a single room. During the response, crews rescued a dog that was found inside a crate while the resident was away from the home, officials said.

The room where the fire started sustained heavy fire damage, while the remainder of that unit suffered significant smoke damage and was left uninhabitable, according to the fire department. Officials said the adjoining unit sustained only minimal smoke damage.

No civilians or firefighters were injured, and the rescued dog appeared to be doing well, officials said.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and remains under investigation by the Monroe fire marshal.

Firefighters remained at the scene for approximately 90 minutes conducting overhaul and ventilation operations.

About 30 volunteer firefighters from the Monroe, Stevenson and Stepney fire departments responded, along with Monroe EMS and the Monroe Police Department. Firefighters from Shelton and Trumbull were also dispatched but were canceled while en route.
