The first annual 5K Angel Run in Milford held on Sunday saw 302 runners come out to support Angelman Syndrome and the Fighting Angels Foundation.

The Fighting Angels Foundation is a charitable organization that aims to support, fund research and raise awareness of the rare neuro-genetic disorder Angelman Syndrome. According to the organization’s Facebook page, the organization’s inspiration and initial beneficiary is Joseph (Joey) Paul Moretti Jr.

Joey Moretti is 3-years-old and suffers from Angelman Syndrome, which affects one in every 15,000 children at birth. Joey was diagnosed with the disease in July 2013 after he showed little to no developmental progress.

According to Mayo Clinic, Angelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes developmental disabilities and neurological problems, such as difficulty speaking, balancing and walking and in some cases seizures.

Joey’s mother, Tai Moretti told WTNH that Joey is one of 20 percent in his genotype who suffers from seizures. He is also unable to walk or talk.

The organization, which has existed for a little more than a year has been holding events all year raising awareness about the disorder hoping to one day find a cure.

Stephanie Koutikas, co-owner of The Greek Spot Cafe and Grill, who sponsored the 5K told WTNH the event was the community’s mission as a family.

Joey is currently going through treatment for his disorder.

On the Fighting Angels website, Joey’s parents say that he is beating the odds every day and continues to rewrite the textbooks as do other Angels his age and older. They hope that with the help of their family, friends and funding research that their son will one day have a voice, walk and be an asset to the world.
