Fallen Tree Sparks Fire In Monroe Roadway: Fire Department
Officials said a tree fell onto utility wires, igniting a fire and damaging part a Monroe street.
MONROE, CT — A fallen tree brought down utility wires and sparked a fire in the roadway on Church Street over the weekend, according to the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters and Monroe police responded to Church Street between Abbey Road and Founders Way at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday after a large tree fell onto utility wires and ignited a fire in the roadway, the fire department said.
Crews remained on scene while utility workers secured the power lines. Once Eversource made the area safe, firefighters extinguished the fire and cooled the roadway, according to officials.

The fire department said the heat from the blaze damaged the road surface. Utility restoration, tree removal and roadway repairs were expected following the incident.
Firefighters cleared the scene at about 1 p.m., according to the department.

Church Street was expected to remain closed following the incident to allow for power restoration, tree removal and roadway repairs. Officials said the heat from the fire damaged the road surface.
No injuries were reported.
