Fuel Spill Cleanup To Close Monroe Road For Days; DEEP Addresses Well Concerns

MONROE, CT — A major fuel spill cleanup following a tanker truck rollover in Monroe is expected to keep one road closed for days, though state officials say they do not anticipate problems with nearby drinking water wells.

The crash happened just before 5:30 a.m. Monday on Hattertown Road near Guinea Road, where police said a Hi-Ho fuel truck overturned during heavy rain after the driver lost control on a curve.

Guinea Road is expected to remain closed for about a week while contaminated soil is excavated and replaced, and Hattertown Road will continue to have daytime closures and detours during the cleanup.

Officials said wells within 1,000 feet of the crash will be tested as a precaution, but DEEP does not expect neighboring wells to be affected.

Residents who notice unusual odors or discoloration in their drinking water are encouraged to contact the First Selectman's Office or Monroe Health Department.
