Man Found Asleep at Wheel in Monroe Faces DUI Charge

A caller reported a stopped vehicle at an intersection in Monroe.

A Shelton man was charged with a DUI after he was allegedly found unconscious in a vehicle.

According to police, on April 5 at around 4 a.m. a caller reported a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Judd Road and Route 25 in Monroe . The caller also reported that the operator was unconscious with his foot on the brake.

When an officer arrived, the operator, Luis Gouveia, 25 was found slumped over the steering wheel and appeared to be sleeping, police said. The officer was able to wake up Gouveia and while conversing with him noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from him.

Gouveia failed field sobriety tests and was arrested and charged with unsafe movement, stopped car and driving under the influence, police said.

According to police, he submitted to breath tests during the booking process, which resulted in a .201 blood alcohol level.

He was given a $500 bond and a court date of April 15.
