Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is recruiting volunteers to participate in Project FeederWatch and to maintain its bird feeding stations. OnSaturday, November 1 at 1:00 p.m., volunteers will be trained in Project FeederWatch protocols at the Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby.

Project FeederWatch is a nationwide research effort that monitors the distribution and populations of winter bird species such as house finches, goldfinches, downy woodpeckers and black-capped chickadees across the country. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology developed the project, now in its 28th year. Volunteers monitor and count the number of birds that are using our bird feeders during pre-selected days between November and March. The data is carefully recorded and entered online at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website for compilation, analysis and publication.
