Monroe Budget Referendum: 2017 Voter's Guide
Residents will vote on the town's budget Tuesday in one of the more pivotal budget referendums in years. Here is what you need to know.

MONROE, CT — With statewide cuts to municipal aid looming, residents will hit the polls for the 2017 budget referendum.
Residents will take to all four polling places in town to rule on a $82.8 million budget. Gov. Dannel Malloy's proposed cuts to the Education Cost Sharing formula had town officials on high alert during the budget process.

Polls will be open from 6a.m. to 8 p.m.

- Fawn Hollow School
- Stepney Elementary School
- Monroe Elementary School
- Masuk High School

Budget Details
Residents will be deciding on the approval of a budget which represents a 0.26 percent decrease than the current budget.
Here are the most prominent features:
- A tax increase of 2.82 percent
- A projected mill rate increase of 2.17 percent
- A projected mill rate for real estate and personal property of 35.76
- $28.2 million in actual municipal expenditures, which equals a 6.23 percent decrease from the prior year budget.
- A $54.6 million Board of Education budget, equaling a zero percent increase from the previous year.

According to a report from the Monroe Courier, the town was not considering Gov. Malloy's plan to shift 1/3 of teacher pensions to municipalities. However, House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz told the Hartford Courant that the Governor's plan is unlikely to pass.
