Monroe Firefighters Battle Early Morning Blaze

MONROE, CT -- Stevenson Volunteer Fire Company, Monroe and Stepney Fire Department firefighters were called to a house fire on Bagburn Hill Road shortly after midnight on Friday. The house was safely evacuated and no residents or firefighters were injured.

Upon arrival firefighters saw there was heavy fire in the rear of the house that had spread inside the attic. Firefighters were able to contain the fire through an aggressive interior attack in the attic.

Due to the absence of fire hydrants in the area, tankers from Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Riverside Fire Company, and White Hills Fire Company in Shelton were called to the scene. Most of these were not needed, according to a social media post from Stevenson VFC.

Parts of the second floor and attic sustained significant damage while the first floor received mostly water damage. Firefighters determined that the house is no longer habitable.

Representatives from the Red Cross were assisting residents with lodging and supplies when crews cleared at 3:00 a.m.

The cause is under investigation by the Monroe fire marshal’s office.
