Monroe Firefighters Warn of Scam

Volunteer fire departments in Trumbull and Oxford have also alerted their followers.

MONROE, CT --- The Stepney fire department serving Monroe, as well as volunteer fire departments in Trumbull and Oxford, are warning of a scam targeting their supporters.

Phone scammers are calling private residents, misrepresenting themselves as members of a local volunteer firefighting organization, and soliciting donations. To make the ruse more believable, caller IDs from scam calls have shown up as “VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS” or “FIRST RESPONDERS.”

Through their Facebook page, the Stepney FD is alerting residents that they do not do any sort of fund raising over the phone, and advising their supporters to contact the police if they receive any calls soliciting donations.
