Monroe Firefighters Warn of Scam

Local firefighters are reporting that another group is seeking donations in their name.

MONROE, CT — Firefighters are warning the public about an "illegitimate" organization soliciting funds ostensibly on behalf of local volunteers.

"A group that calls itself the Volunteer Firefighters Association a program of the Heroes United PAC has been calling and writing people in Monroe asking for donations to help our firefighters," officials from the Stepney Volunteer Fire Company wrote on their Facebook page.

According to the firefighters, the group is "actually a political action committee based in Milwaukee, WI and has nothing to do with local firefighters."

All Monroe fire departments, including the Stepney Volunteer Fire Company, the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department and the Stevenson Volunteer Fire Company traditionally hold annual fund drives, but will specify a local in-district address where they they will accept donations.

The Volunteer Firefighters Association "is in no way affiliated or associated with any of the three volunteer fire departments in the town of Monroe, nor do we benefit from any donations made to them," Stepney officials made clear.
