Monroe LWV Cancels First Selectman Debate
The League has a policy of not allowing "empty chair" debates.

The Monroe branch of the League of Women Voters for the Bridgeport Area has canceled an Oct. 6 candidate’s debate.
The League had invited the two candidates for Town of Monroe First Selectman to participate in the event, but only the Democratic challenger—Dan Hunsberger—accepted.
Incumbent Republican Steve Vavrek declined the invitation.

Myrna Mills Albino, who along with Barbara Young, was organizing the debate for the League, said in a press release that they regretted depriving the voters of an important service.
“Given First Selectman Vavrek’s refusal to participate, the League must cancel our event again this year because it is our policy not to allow ‘empty chair’ debates,” Albino said.

According to the League, this is the second election cycle in which Vavrek has declined.
In a statement received by the League, Vavrek said that he intends to do only one debate, which will be sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
