Monroe Man Arrested for Referencing a School Shooting on Social Media: Police

The man is a former Monroe student, who posted references to a school shooting on Facebook.

MONROE, CT — A Monroe man was arrested for making references to a school shooting on Facebook, according to Monroe Police.

Peter Jennings, 21, of Monroe was arrested after concerned citizens forwarded the posts to Monroe police Tuesday night. Jennings was arrested Wednesday and charged with breach of peace.

Police say that officers attempted to locate and speak to Jennings concerning the post, and measures were taken by police and the Monroe Public Schools after those attempts failed.

"After several attempts to locate him, measures were taken by the Monroe Police Department and the Monroe Public Schools," Lt. Stephen Corrone said in a statement."The police and the schools, worked in cooperation to take every precaution to ensure the safety of the students at all town schools."

The nature of the posts were not released by police. Commending the action of residents, Corrone urged the public to contact police by telephone when a safety issue arises.

"The use of social media to report concerns is a valuable option but is not monitored on a continuous basis," said Corrone."In respect to timeliness and a quick response, the Monroe police suggest always contacting your local police by phone when safety issues arise."
