Monroe Moves Forward On School Building Improvements

A town committee has received responses from architectural firms as officials review school building needs and project costs.

MONROE, CT — Monroe officials say a town committee is making progress in assessing school and municipal building needs, including preliminary planning for roof replacement projects at two local schools.

First Selectman Terrence Rooney said Thursday that the Facilities Planning Committee has completed an initial step in organizing current school facility needs and received multiple responses to requests for qualifications from architectural firms.

The committee is working to identify building priorities while weighing the town's needs against potential costs, according to a statement shared by the Town of Monroe.

Rooney said the committee has drawn on years of studies, space needs assessments and research by the Board of Education's Ad Hoc Committee, which was formed during former Chairman Dave Ferris' tenure.

That research has helped guide the town's planning and design process, Rooney said.

The committee has also held meetings every two weeks to review potential school construction grant applications and projects involving the roofs at Monroe Elementary School and Jockey Hollow Middle School.

The Town Council previously authorized preliminary planning and grant-related activities for the two roof replacement projects in May. The council also designated the Facilities Planning Committee as the school building committee for those projects.

The town has not announced construction start dates or final costs for the projects in its latest update.
