Monroe Police Join Regional Effort To Crack Down On Speeding, Reckless Driving

MONROE, CT — Monroe police will work with six neighboring departments on coordinated traffic enforcement under a renewed mutual-aid agreement aimed at speeding, reckless driving and other violations, town officials announced.

The Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit Mutual Police Assistance Compact includes Monroe, Fairfield, Trumbull, Bridgeport, Easton, Stratford and Westport.

The agreement allows the departments to combine personnel and other resources to target problem areas and conduct coordinated enforcement of moving violations and driving under the influence, according to the town.

First Selectman Terrence Rooney said the effort is intended to limit additional costs while allowing more police resources to be deployed in areas where residents have raised concerns about speeding and traffic safety.

The town also noted that Police Chief Keith White does not favor speed cameras, describing the regional enforcement approach as a way to address traffic concerns through coordinated policing instead.

Separately, Monroe police have applied for a state Highway Safety Project Grant for improvements near Hiram Hill at Judd and Stanley roads. The proposed project would include a radar-activated curve-ahead sign, tree clearing to improve visibility and a centerline rumble strip. The town said the area has a history of crashes.
