Press release:

On Sunday, October 26th, Monroe Little League’s 10U Softball Team won the 2014 AAA Westport Fall Classic by a score of 8-6 over the Westport Vipers. After finishing the regular season with a record of two wins against two losses - two additional games were rained out - Monroe played five games over two weekends. Behind strong pitching and timely hitting, #4 seeded Monroe took four out of five tournament games, including wins over the # 1 seed Westport Tigers and the #2 seed Westport Vipers in the Championship Game. Monroe outscored their opponents 45 to 27.

In what was probably the best game of the season, Monroe jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Westport Vipers with a 2-run triple by Sophie McCarthy, who was herself driven in by a Kyra McCarthy single. Westport answered with 3 of their own in the bottom of the first. To make matters worse, Monroe didn’t score in the top of the second while giving away 2 more runs to Westport, making it 5-3 Westport going in to the third. The offense remained patient though, and Monroe scored 3 after walks to Ava Moretti, Sofia Lieto, Bella Holsworth and Ava Tornay and a single by Gabby Luongo. Not to be outdone, Westport responded with 3 runs of their own. Going in to the fourth, Monroe trailed Westport by 2 runs.

The wheels finally came off the bus for Westport when Monroe rallied for 4 runs and, after Westport couldn’t score in their half of the inning, left Monroe on the doorstep to victory with the score 10-8. In the top of the 5th, Westport mowed down the Monroe offense 1-2-3, leaving Westport 3 outs to make up a 2 run deficit. The bottom of the fifth started off terribly for Monroe as Kyra McCarthy gave up back to back walks to start the inning. But with runners on 2nd and 3rd and none out, she settled down and struck out the next three batters to preserve the win and give Monroe the victory.

The championship roster included Julia Bacoulis, Ella Bunovsky, Erin Daly, Hannah Fagan, Molly Halliday, Kierra Herlihy, Isabella Holsworth, Natalie Lieto, Sofia Lieto, Gabriella Luongo, Sophia McCarthy, Ava Moretti, Ava Tornay and Kara Traggianese. Coach Matthew McCarthy and Assistant Coaches Joe Bacoulis, Frank Lieto, Tony Luongo and Tony Moretti guided the team to another successful Fall softball campaign for Monroe.
