Obituary: Carl Edward Sword, 81, of Monroe

Carl valued education and earned advanced degrees in the sciences including biology (physiology), ecology, and marine biology.

MONROE, CT —Carl Edward Sword, 81, transitioned from Labor to Eternal Rest Sunday, November 18, 2018.

Carl’s greatest love and passion was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Davidson Sword, his children Beth (Vincent) Meyer, Carl Howard Sword (Susan Smith), Peter (Jane) Sword, Karen (John) Sword-Daviau, eight grandchildren, and his brothers Bryan Sword and Roger Sword. He was predeceased by his parents Carl Wilbur Sword and Violet Mary ( née Vivirski) Sword, and his brother Robert Sword.

As a young man, Carl served in the US Army Reserves. He valued education and earned advanced degrees in the sciences including biology (physiology), ecology, and marine biology. Carl was a Science Educator in the Stratford (CT) Public Schools for over 30 years. He loved being outdoors, and one of his greatest joys was going to and supporting YMCA Camp Hi Rock and Bear Rock Lodge in many capacities throughout his entire life. Carl was also an active member of the United Methodist Church of Monroe for over 45 years.

Friends may call Saturday, November 24 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., with a Memorial Service at 1pm at Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT. In lieu of flowers, Carl’s family respectfully requests donations to the United Methodist Church, 515 Cutler’s Farm Road, Monroe, CT 06468.
