Obituary: Karen Jennifer Heiney Brown, of Monroe
Karen was a creative artist and traveled abroad to explore the arts.

MONROE, CT — Karen Jennifer Heiney Brown, age 50, of Colorado Springs, CO, formerly of Monroe, passed away peacefully in her home on September 8 after a courageous 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Karen, daughter of Betty Heiney of Monroe, and the late Harold Heiney, was a graduate of Masuk High School, received her B.F.A. from Ithaca College, and continued her graduate work at Rhode Island School of Design.
Karen was a creative artist and traveled abroad to explore the arts. During her years in Colorado, Karen worked for Current, Inc., and most recently the Colorado Springs Police Department. In her free time, Karen was an avid cyclist who enjoyed the many club rides in which she participated, and enjoyed supporting the US Air Force Academy Falcons ice hockey team.

In addition to her mother, Karen is survived by a brother, Greg Heiney of New London, and a sister, Sue Waters of Monroe. Karen leaves behind her beloved rescue dog, Lexi, and long-time friend Terry Smith.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m. at Monroe Congregational Church, 34 Church Street, Monroe. If your wardrobe permits, please wear something purple to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Colorado Shiba Inu Rescue, P.O. Box 801, Englewood, CO 80151. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the dedicated cancer care staff at UC Health Memorial Hospital Central, Colorado, for the outstanding care and compassion provided to Karen during her illness.
