Summer Baseball Teams Sizzle in the Playoffs

Monroe 12s whip Bethel, 13s win a thriller over Westport and 11s defeat West Haven in I-84 play.

Monroe's summer baseball teams continued their post season play with victories Tuesday night.

The 12 year old all stars playing in the I-84 League defeated Bethel 10-1 to advance to the semifinals thanks to home runs from Justin Young and Matt Duignan.

The 12's play Wednesday night in Danbury, winner advances to the finals.

The 13 Year Old Travel team playing in the I-84 League defeated Westport 4-3 to advance to the semi-finals on Thursday at Wolfe Park Diamond No. 2.

The 13's defense was stellar behind strong pitching from Dylan Izzo; Dylan pitched six strong innings allowing only one earned run with five strike outs, four walks and four hits.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings. Westport scored a run in the top of the fourth and Monroe answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a big two out two RBI double from Doug Wisentaner.

Westport tied up the game in the top of the fifth and Monroe took the lead back on a bases loaded single from Adam Madison.

Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning and Monroe went into the top of the seventh clinging to a one run lead.

Monroe's pitcher started struggling in the top of the seventh and gave up the lead after a few walks and an overthrow.

Brian Keller came into the game to pitch with the bases loaded and no outs.

Brian got the first batter he faced to ground out into a 1-2-3 double play and then struck out the next batter on four pitches to preserve the 3-3 tie.

In the bottom of the seventh Monroe came to the plate looking for the walk-off win.

Kyle Horton led off the inning with an infield hit and after a fly out the next two batters walked to load up the bases with only one out.

Brian Keller hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop and a high throw allowed Kyle Horton to score the winning run under as the catcher was pulled off of the plate and a 4-3 Monroe victory.

The 13's play again Friday night at Wolfe Park Field No. 2 at 5:30 in the semi finals.

The 11-year-old All Stars continued their stellar play in the Seabreeze Tournament in West Haven with a  5-3 win over Fairfield Tuesday night.

The 11's are 3-1 in this tournament with one game to play in round robin games and are first place in their division.
