MONTVILLE, CT — An inmate injured several staff members at the Corrigan Correctional Center in Uncasville on Monday, and three needed treatment at a hospital, according to the state Department of Correction.
Andrius Banevicius, a department spokesperson, said the incident began Monday around 9:50 a.m.
Following a routine medical examination, an inmate verbally threatened a department healthcare staff member, according to Banevicius.
Correctional staff responded and the inmate “became combative towards them until they were able to secure the individual,” he said.
According to Banevicius, seven staff members were assaulted before the inmate was finally subdued. Three of them sought medical treatment at an outside hospital, while the others opted to remain on duty, he said.
Banevicius said Tuesday all three staff members who went to the hospital for treatment have been released.
The department did not release the name of the inmate, citing a pending investigation.
The Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident.
Interim Commissioner Sharonda Carlos said, “I pray for a swift recovery for the staff members that were injured.”
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the difficult and unpredictable environment the brave correctional and health services staff of this agency work in daily,” Carlos added.
The Department of Correction is also conducting its own review of the incident and its protocols, with a goal of preventing a similar incident from happening again.
