May's asset is Religious Community, which encourages youth to participate in some kind of religious setting for at least one hour per week. I realize that any talk of religion can provoke a great deal of controversy....with the "separation of church and state" and all, but I am not looking to create controversy, promote ANY religion, or offend anyone. The message is simple here: when kids feel connected to something larger than themselves they often are able to maintain a stronger sense of morality, compassion, and self.
I think that the best example I can share right now is football great Tim Tebow. It is no secret that this guy grew up with a strong sense of moral conviction and is clearly dedicated to his faith. Did his connection to religion impact his ability to play football; well who can really say if it did or didn't, but it sure does affect his attitude on the field, in the locker room, and in how he treats others: teammates, coaches, and fans. In addition his closeness with his main support system: his family, is obvious in just watching him interact with them.
Many professional and famous athletes over the years have credited their religion/faith for helping them to achieve a better sense of self-discipline and self- worth. It is not uncommon to see an athlete on the sidelines, in the dugout, or on the bench head bent down in silence, or maybe grabbing and kissing a piece of symbolic jewelry before the game. It comes down to our personal beliefs in the big picture of things, and the freedom America affords each and every one of us.

I was raised in a semi-religious household and attended parochial highschool, and I do think that some of what I learned at home and in school helped me to have a better sense of morality and a better sense of self too. So, yes, my experience with a "religious" community was positive...it afforded me the capacity to be more compassionate, to respect others, and to forgive, and that is definitely an asset in my life!
